How to become a Marriage Celebrant in Australia?

Have you ever wondered how one becomes a Marriage Celebrant in Australia?

I don’t remember the moment that I decided to become a Marriage Celebrant - by my gosh I am so glad I did. I guess I was in a moment in my life where there was so much chaos & noise and in my heart I knew that I needed to find silence, joy and passion again. Prior to becoming a Marriage Celebrant I was an Early Years Teacher working across a variety of schools & Early Learning Centres.

I had been through the marriage journey before however I had many friends around me in the midst of planning their day. I was chatting with a dear friend of mine one day and she mentioned that she was struggling to find a celebrant that really understood her vision and could reflect their love on their day. This could have been the pivotal moment where the idea crept in. You know when life just aligns for you, I really think Marriage Celebrancy for me, was served on a silver platter as it was just ‘meant to be’. Let’s be honest, it was either that or it was the cheeky algorithm that landed the perfect person who had a passion for exactly what I was pursuing. That person being Jill from the Unleashed Collective.

I recall coming across an add on. my phone and it was probably because it was listening to my conversation with those close to me where I was sharing my ideas of becoming a Marriage Celebrant. I was so grateful as the conversation lead to “Oh wow, you. would be so perfect at that” which was just another reason why I kept moving forward with the idea. I scheduled a call with the beautiful Jill from the Unleashed Collective and I definitely surpassed the time frame which was probably allowed for an initial talk but there was just so much to share. Making that call that day was the best decision I have made to date (obviously besides marrying my beautiful husband and the birth of our two girls) but you know what I mean!

That being said, becoming a marriage celebrant in Australia requires dedication and responsibility. Namely, to become a professional with exceptional skills, you must put in some effort. So, here are a few things to take into account:

  • Work out your schedule

The first step in your learning process is establishing study hours and incorporating them into your life schedule. I don’t know about you but life is chaotic with a husband, business, two children and a dog so it was vital that I found a trainer provider who was flexible ad online! In order to obtain Certificate IV in Celebrancy, I recommend going through a programme lasting 12 months that also had the option for you to complete it earlier if you are able too.

However, you need to consider that your learning hours should be productive without wearing yourself out. That is where, the Unleashed Collective Training Provider suggests going through a course for 18 months for the best results. In my experience, this time frame was just enough to obtain the necessary knowledge for becoming a professional.

  • Find a suitable provider

You must find someone who can teach and lead you when learning something new. The point of being a celebrant is to make a couples ceremony not on legally solemnised but fun and memorable, - so learning how to obtain both of these skills is vital!

My experience with Unleashed Collective Training, like many others, was INCREDIBLE! My trainer Jill made everything easy and accessible. She was super supportive and approachable throughout the whole training process, so I learned in a relaxing way. I enjoyed every minute of it and I felt incredibly ready for this job once I graduated - looking back I really wish I had thrown myself a bounce graduation party!

  • Consider relevant subjects

To build a business as a Marriage Celebrant professionally, you must learn the core concepts and know what is expected from you. Your duties will generally include interviewing clients and preparing their ceremonies. However, you will also learn how to anticipate their needs and provide them with what they desire.

With Unleashed Collective Training Provider, I learned how to work with diverse people and establish work ethics. Moreover, I learned how to manage business operations, which is important for this job.

The training to become a marriage celebrant is a real journey. The outcome is just amazing since there is nothing better than making someone’s love story more magical and authentic. As I said, this was the best decision and I am just getting started in my business journey over at Hayley Hart Celebrant.
